Rohit Sharma Likely to Announce Retirement from T20I

After losing the Cricket World Cup 2023 final, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is likely to retire from T20I to focus on ODIs and Tests instead. This means that we will see a new captain for the T20 World Cup 2024.

India’s disappointing performance in the 2021 World Cup led Virat Kohli to step down as leader, and Rohit Sharma was named captain of the T20I team. Through time, Rohit rose to become India’s all-format leader.

Notably, neither Rohit Sharma nor Virat Kohli have played in an India T20I since the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, where they lost badly by 10 wickets in the semi-final.

India lost the World Cup 2023 not long ago. It was their best chance to end a ten-year ICC title drought. Australia beat them by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India lost the T20 World Cup 2022, the World Test Championship 2023, and the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in the past year while Rohit Sharma was in charge. It will be interesting to see if the selection group led by Ajit Agarkar gives him another chance and lets him stay in charge until the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian batsman, said it was important to pick both Kohli and Rohit for the T20 World Cup 2024. Gambhir said that he wanted Rohit Sharma to be captain because of how well he leads and how well he has been hitting the ball lately.

Gambhir said, “If Rohit Sharma gets picked, Virat Kohli will get picked automatically.” If Rohit Sharma wants to play in the T20 World Cup 2024, he should be picked as captain instead of just a batter.

He also said, “For sure, both Kohli and Rohit should be picked. They both need to be picked.” But what I really want is for Rohit Sharma to be captain of the T20 World Cup. Hardik Pandya has been captain in T20Is, but I still want Rohit Sharma to be captain in the T20 World Cup.

The cricket world is looking forward to the T20 World Cup 2024, and the debate about Rohit Sharma’s part makes it even more interesting. What will happen to the senior player and captain? Will they keep leading from the front, or will a new group of players take over?

The upcoming 5-match T20I series will probably be used to try out different strategies and possible captaincy picks.
